You think free means good? I think free means good for cutting down the development cost. I used to use Adobe Dreamweaver CS3. I really didn’t like the $$ they charge me. And Zend is the same to. Then I knew Netbeans, its IDE supports to PHP development. And I also can work with HTML well.

Following are free stuffs that I recommend to you:

  1. Netbeans

Many PHP programmers will tell you that the only way to program is with notepad. While this can give you ‘cred, it can be a heartache when trying to find error just starting out. Why put yourself through the pain? Netbeans is a full featured PHP editor. And its free that’s the best part. You can view the various editors available here.

  2. GIMP

GIMP is a versatile graphics manipulation package, very similar to Adobe Photoshop without the $699 price tag. You can download the GIMP here.

  3. Inkscape

Inkscape is a another graphics editing program that allows you to design vector based graphics for your web pages. It’s similar to Adobe Illustrator without $599 price tag.

  4. AppServ

AppServ is a full-featured of Apache, MySQL, PHP, phpMyAdmin. And you haven’t to do much of configurations for your server.

  5. Firefox

As a programmer you will want to test your creation cross platform, and with Firefox’s market share in the browser wars you will want to make sure your website performs well in this browser. Additionally Firefox has a host of plug-ins to help you in your programming pursuits.

I think while free can be a good thing you usually get what you pay for. I would stray from using these tools on a site for your business. Personal use if fine though.

As a web designer/developer you can throw browsershots.org or adobe browserlab in the mix as two free cool cross browser testing tools as well. Although the quality with browsershots hasn’t been up to scratch lately. A good paid alternative is multibrowserviewer.com or crossbrowsertesting.com
