Finding Hidden Characters in a File

As well as the characters you can see in a web page (or any other text file), there are a whole host of hidden characters that you can’t see. Most of the time you don’t need to know where these characters are, which is why they are hidden in the first place. Occasionally though, perhaps when you need to perform some specific processing on one or more files, you need to find and display these characters. In this article I’ll show how you can use a simple Perl script to find and display hidden characters in text files.

Here is the script:

The script initially finds all the files in the ‘current’ directory (folder) that end with ‘.txt’. If you wanted to find all the files that ended in ‘.htm’ or ‘.html’, for example, you would just need to change the ‘.txt’ in the line containing the grep command.

The second part of the script makes a backup of each file found, which is always a good idea, and then searches through each file identifying and displaying (inside each file) the hidden characters found.

The characters that this script finds are the ‘end of line’ character, the ‘end of file’ character, the ‘tab’ character, and any control characters. You could of course edit the script to find different hidden characters if you wanted to.

The way the script finds and displays the characters is by using regular expressions. Regular expressions offer a very powerful way of searching for and (often) replacing strings within files. This script is written in Perl, which offers more support for regular expressions than any other language.

The regular expressions are contained in the lines beginning ‘$line =’. There are four of them in this script.

Running the Script

The script is designed to run on a local machine. Therefore, in order for it to work you will need to have a perl interpreter installed on your computer.

If you named the script ‘hidden.pl’, for example, you should be able to run it by double-clicking it from within Windows Explorer. Alternatively, you could open a command window, navigate to where the script (and files to be processed) are located, and type ‘perl hidden.pl’ at the command prompt.

Succeeding in SEO

Your Keywords are Number 1!!

Use targeted keywords and take them to design your web pages around them using a 6% ratio. Long tail keywords for SEO are the ones that work the best. If possible incorporate them in your Title Page as well.

Your Content

Have good quality content. No fluff! Write articles and post them. Information is what drives the search engine. Always update your website on a weekly basis for maximum SEO.  Products and informative articles that are on topic to your niche combined with your keywords equal higher rankings.

Article Marketing

Write articles and submit them to several places such as Ezine Articles, GoArticles, Articles Plus, Hubpages, and Squidoo.  In the resource box, where available, add your links along with the description of what you offer .Don’t forget to use the power of social sites as well. Many places allow you to post your articles. Use the power of RSS feeds to add more exposure. Have your articles be informative with current up to date topics. Your word count needs to be at least 300 to 500 words. Check each site for their requirements.

Link Building

Use niche related sites to build backlinks that are related to your specific keywords. Be careful of your anchor text so that you links are clickable.

Google Analytics

Analytics is the measurement of those that visit your website. The reason that I have included this in here is because it is imperative for you to use this to increase your sales, visitors, and SEO. I decided to describe all factors that are of greatest importance here.

What do your customers do when they visit your website? Using this information can increase your sales and SEO rankings.

Where are they coming from? Understanding this will guide you in your niche efforts.

Are they returning? You need to use different technique in this process and if you are not receiving returning visitors, then you need to reexamine you SEO factors.

What actions are the visitors taking? Develop ideas and determine what goals you want to achieve. Follow through with a plan.

Keywords, Again Your Number 1!!! If your keywords are not producing results go back to the beginning and rework the process.

3 Simple Ways To Increase Your Traffic, Responses and Sales

Internet marketing brings the ability to operate your online business at your own pace with no hassle, no boss or deadlines and it is very easy to do with little or no experience – right… WRONG!

This is the belief that most people have or may I say the way they want it to be.

Could it be done that way?

It could be done that way and some people are actually doing it with a little twist to it – this is only happening to selected few while majority find it to be exactly opposite of easy.

The selected few that are getting things done and achieving their internet marketing dreams are the ones that have master the email marketing best practices; the dos, don’t s and how to get things done.

If you’re reading this article and you’re struggling with achieving success online, you need to pay attention here because we’re going back to the basic and looking into the email marketing tips that you might have overlooked because you think the solution to the problem could not just be this simple.

To get started, I need to ask you this simple question; do your lists REALLY make you money?

If not, would you like it to?

If you’re like me, you answer would be YES.

The way to boost online success is to examine your email marketing techniques. Special thanks to tracking technology which provide great drill down tracking tools that allows you to know how many of your e-mail was delivered, open, read and responded to – which is a great way to examine your e-mail marketing performance.

Before we examine how to increase your traffic, I need to let you know the assumption of this article. The tips in this article assume you already have a list, if you don’t have a list or know how to build your list; this article is NOT for you.

Now that we’ve clear the assumption, let examine the ways to increase your traffic, responses and sales.

Way #1 – First thing first – make sure your subscriber is getting your mail. With high email bounce rate, blockers and email filters preventing your mail to get to your subscribers, your email marketing have zero chance of your e-mail making it to the in-box.

The solution to this is to ask your subscribers to include your e-mail address among the email they accept and are willing to receive their information. They need to do this when they subscribe to your list to ensure you can reach them successfully – this may sound so simple, but it is the number one email marketing issue.

Way #2 – Your subject line is extremely important, it is the gate way to your message and in most cases the only thing your subscriber will see. Let say you pass the first stage, your subscriber receive your e-marketing message and they also receive the e-marketing of your competitors.

Remember, you are not the only one seeking your subscriber’s attention. They will scan through their mail and pick the one that interests them. Even though your e-mail get in to their in-box and they are able to see it, the next acid test is for them to click on it – how is your email marketing subject line doing in this department, just a food for thought.

Way #3 – What is your response rate, according to the industry statistics, average is about 3% – I hope your e-marketing is doing better than that. The quality of your content, creativity and presentation has a major role to play in this section.

Make sure you’re realistic in your message and be as genuine as possible – using hype doesn’t get you anywhere, it will only damage the relationship you’re trying to build with your list.

If you’re among the lucky few that are able to get their e-mail into the hands of their subscribers and get them to open it, you don’t want to miss out on convincing them to respond to your call-to-action.

You see, it is only when they visit your site or the site you’re trying to promote that you have any chance of making a sale.

Creating Directories That Will Attract Traffic and Raise Your Page Ranking

If your goal is to earn money from Google Adsense through content or article directories, you’re better off setting your sights elsewhere. Directories are not high performers when it comes to Google Adsense ads and if you expect a good stream of income from these, you’re bound to get disappointed. However, there are other things that you can expect from creating directories and if you look closely, they could be your ticket to finding a good source of revenue.

What directories can offer you

Online directories are repositories of Web content; usually articles, write-ups, news, video and audio clips or links to other websites. They can be part of a group of sites found on a larger host site or they can be independent. People go to these sites either to submit content and links or to find them.

Directories are beneficial in several ways:

They bring in traffic.

If you understand how, traffic can be used to bring in revenues through your directory. Once you set this up, visitors come to pay you a visit like writers and site owners who want to submit their articles and webmasters who wish to submit links to their websites. Traffic can be a good source of either cash (if and when you charge for links to your website) and lists for your Internet marketing efforts.

They can get you paid directly.

Again, charging for links will help you monetize your directory. But this can only be done if your site has already built a reputation, is generally popular or at least has a niche following and enjoys a high volume traffic. You can also charge for links if your directory is enjoying a high PageRank. Your directory’s popularity will mutually benefit other sites because it places them in quality company.

Directories provide reciprocal links.

Reciprocal links are simply links that point back to your website. A high ranking directory can do this. More links mean more traffic and better relevancy for your directory.

Creating directories

You could create a basic directory using good old HTML or you could make it easier on yourself by using applications such as Wordpad, Dreamweaver and FrontPage. If you’re computer savvy and know your way around scripts, you can use those instead and simply build a MySQL database. If you want a cheaper way to do it, check out directory scripts being offered for free online.

Determine your subject matter.

What is your goal in putting up a directory? Make this clear from the get-go. This will help you design a well-organized website. You should also decide at this point on the type of subjects you want to include on your directory. It’s a good idea to offer a variety of subjects. Try popular subjects such as finance, credit, gaming, travel, Internet marketing and the like.

You could also take one general subject and then offer to post content that are related to it. Instead of attracting a general-interest audience, you can cater to a niche market instead. You could build a strong following this way.

Provide original content.

Content found in your directory will be contributed from multiple sites. It’s highly possible that those articles will appear in other directories as well. As such, you probably can’t claim to have original material on your website. Since original content has a higher value for page ranking, try to produce original content on a regular basis. Write your own articles or pay for unique content. You can also try to do research on high-value content and then produce materials with those subjects.

Check your webhost for compatibility.

Creating a directory means you will be offering it from a hosted page so it’s a good idea to ask your webhost if it can efficiently run your website. Get a hosting account with a provider that offers you sufficient disk space and plenty of support. To give you an idea of what you will be looking at, let’s take a look at hosts such as Hostgator.com. They charge a monthly fee of about $7 in exchange for an account with 50GB of disk space. For $10 a month, you can increase that capacity to 100GB. There are several other host providers that can offer you similar services. Simply look them up online to compare which one will give you the best service.

How to Avoid Denial from the CPM Ad Networks

With the big Ad Networks touting ever expanding reach and a firm grasp of the “Long-Tail”, it almost seems like a slap in the face when you receive that denial letter stating that “your site is not a proper fit for our network at this time”. Well don’t worry, it may not be due to the fact that your site has an unpleasant design or inferior content, you may have just broken one of the ad network’s 7 deadly publisher sins.

To help guide you through the treacherous submission process, here is a list of the seven deadly sins publishers make when applying to the big CPM networks

  1. Use an email associated with the domain you are submitting.
This is often the first strike against a publisher. The network’s must first confirm ownership of the web property and if you use a free email (i.e. mycoolsite@yahoo.com) you could get sent straight to the trash bin.
  2. Make sure your site is free and clear of any profane language. With advertisers ever increasing demand for transparency and quality control, finding a four letter word on your site can spell disaster for your site’s application. For all you forum owners, make sure you do a thorough clean up of any postings that may have recently gotten a little out of control.
  3. Don’t be a forum. You saw that one coming, didn’t ya? Yes it is true the big bad Ad Networks are terribly scared of your little forum. For reasons stated in Sin #2, forums with unmoderated content can send shivers down account reps spines when a call comes in from an irate client who is demanding an explanation as to why her Disney ad is smashed up next to bit of less than flattering content on your forum. However, there is an exception to this rule. If your forum is related to a very specific (and profitable) niche category or topic such as Toyota Trucks, you could possibly slip right in.
  4. Provide a Default Ad TagCertain networks request a sample default ad tag. This seems like a needless bother, but if you fail to provide one you will be getting the dreaded denial letter very soon in your in-box. Just give them something, even if it’s not your own default code. You can change it once you have been accepted into the network. It’s just to prove that you are working with another legitimate network and that you aren’t going to be serving up blank ads once they eventually run out of their super sweet CPM network ads.
  5. Unlock Your Domain PrivacyPrivacy is a big concern for all of us. While you are in the application process with big networks you need to unlock your domain’s privacy setting. This will allow you to prove ownership. Once you have been let into the network, then you can lock it back up.
  6. Don’t Call the Network This may be one of the most important rules of all. Theses networks are bombarded with a deluge of emails and phone calls from eager publishers all day long. They have plenty of choices to choose from and the publishers who they assume will be a pain in their back sides are likely to get an immediate deletion of their site application.
  7. Don’t Lie About Your Traffic Levels Yes, we all do it. We say our blogs get 1.2 million page views a day when in fact it’s closer to 1.2. Why this is even still on the application form of the major ad networks, I have no idea. Be realistic about where you are. They have systems in place that tell them exactly how much traffic you are getting, so the closer you are to the reality, the closer you are to getting in!

I hope this information helps you understand why your sites have been getting the big ax from the network behemoths.

Email Marketing: 5 Reasons You Must Start Doing It Today

Do you want to market your business for fractions of a penny per message?

Email marketing is one of the most powerful marketing tools available to your small business. You can achieve outstanding results with email marketing, while investing only a small amount of time and money. Combine that with the potential to target more precisely than direct mailings, that’s a real win for the small business owner.

In tough economic times, it is crucial to continue marketing your business, and maximize the marketing dollars you’re spending. Email marketing is a perfect way to keep your business in front of your customers’ and prospects eyes!

Sometimes, people unfamiliar with email marketing get nervous about it because the first thing they think about is spam, or they’ve heard that most people don’t open their email, right?

Wrong.

Targeted mailings that pique interest result in high email open rates, and an opportunity to build relationships with your customers and make some sales. As for the spam issue, mailing only to people who have given you permission to do so minimizes the risk of being labeled a “spammer”. Using myself as an example, I have mailed thousands of emails to my clients, and prospective clients, and have not had one spam complaint.

Following is a list of five reasons you must start email marketing now!

1. Email marketing is inexpensive.

Email marketing is an affordable way to stretch a tight marketing budget. Unlike direct mail, there is virtually no production, materials or postage expense. Email marketing can cost as little as fractions of a penny per email.

The expenses involved in email marketing involve having a hosted website with email capacity. You may also want to consider subscribing to a list management service, such as Constant Contact or aWeber, to help manage your email campaigns. The fees for this service range from about $15 to $20 per month, which includes unlimited emails.

2. Email marketing is highly targeted.

You can easily segment your email database into different groups, so that your promotions go to individuals most likely to respond to your offer. For example, you may send one offer to existing clients, and send a different one to prospects who’ve expressed interest in your products or services.

3. Email marketing is proactive.

Email marketing enables you to proactively communicate with your existing customers and prospects, instead of passively waiting for them to return to your website or storefront.

It is a highly effective way to communicate promotional offers, news, seminars, which may result in an increase in sales, drive traffic to your website or store, and develop customer trust and loyalty through relationship building.

Sending out a monthly email campaign will keep your business in front of your customers’ and prospects eyes.

4. Email marketing generates an immediate response.

Promotional emails include a call to action that can result in immediate responses. Initial campaign responses generally occur within 48 hours of the time the email campaign is sent; testing and refining your campaigns is immediate. If you use a list management service, you can gauge the open rates of your email campaigns, which provides useful and immediate information you can use to tweak your campaign messages.

5. Email marketing is easy.

The Web-based email marketing products available to small businesses are easy to use. The services available through Constant Contact and aWeber, as well as others, include professional HTML templates, list segmentation and targeting capabilities, as well as automatic tracking and reporting of your email campaign effectiveness, such as for open rates, bounces, and spam reports.

If you’re not a “techie”, have no fear. You don’t need a Webmaster or technical person on staff to handle the development and distribution of your email campaigns.

Email marketing works because it allows precise targeting of your marketing message, it builds loyalty and trust with your customers, it is inexpensive, and best of all, it drives sales. Include email marketing in your arsenal of marketing tools!
